State officials love to stake claim over their regional specialties, from culinary treats (Louisiana made the Natchitoches the official state meat pie in 2003) to the historical (the triceratops is the official state dinosaur of Wyoming, where many of the 67-million-year-old fossils have been discovered). In June, Pennsylvania paid tribute to one of its great regional specialties by adopting the Piper J-3 Cub as the official state airplane. State Representative Michael Hanna spent many years trying to get recognition for the J-3,20,000 of which were manufactured in his district in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, between 1937 and 1947. The aircraft joins two others adopted by states: Connecticut's Corsair F4U (the state produced about 12,500 during World War Ⅱ) and New Mexico's hot-air balloon.
