The number of operations performed since 2006 at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, home to the Department of Defense's busiest single runway. Forty-six types of aircraft fly more than 700 operations a day to and from the base, which is run by the U.S. Air Force's 455th Expeditionary Wing. The wing's civil engineers must work nonstop to keep up with the heavy wear and tear on a runway that's only quiet for a mere two minutes before the next mission rolls through.
