The Tuskegee Legacy

This month the smithsonian Institution welcomes to the National Mall the new National Museum for African American History and Culture. One of the objects the museum displays is a PT-13 Stearman trainer, a big, open-cockpit biplane that has an important place in U.S. history. The Stearman is the airplane that offered the first experience of flight to most members of the U.S. Army Air Corps' 99th fighter squadron, the first African-American military pilots, who later became famous as the Tuskegee Airmen.
