In his manifesto, Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, made a commitment to plant 10,000 trees in London. Now in office, the mayor is not just fulfilling that commitment, but has been behind several actions to increase the tree cover in London. For example, he has expanded the programme to plant trees in the capital and made it easier for residents to both request and plant trees in their areas. Furthermore, Johnson has been out planting trees with groups of volunteers and is behind a campaign called RE:LEAF London, which aims to plant millions more trees across the capital. RE:LEAF London is mirrored by a wider, national campaign known as The Big Tree Plant, led by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Forestry Commission to encourage and support tree planting in the UK.
