FAA Certifies Robinson R66 Police Helicopter

Robinson Helicopter Company has received US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification for the dedicated law enforcement version of its four-seat R66 Turbine helicopter. Standard equipment on the R66 Police includes a FUR Ultra 8000 thermal imaging camera, a lOin (254mm) fold-down colour monitor, 30-million candlepower Spectrolab SX-7 searchlight and a dual audio controller. Robinson believes the $1.1 million cost of the helicopter and its simplified maintenance schedule will appeal to both large and small police agencies. The first production R66 Police was due to be delivered in October to Southern California's Fontana Police Department, which has operated piston-engined R44s since 2005. Robinson is also developing an electronic news gathering (ENG) and float-equipped versions of the R66, both of which are scheduled for introduction in 2013.
