Sixty years ago the then Royal Hellenic Air Force took part in tactical transport missions when the United Nations asked for its help during the Korean crisis. It was a payback to the Allies for their liberation of Greece from the Axis occupation in World War Two and their aerial support during the Greek civil war. No.355 Transport Squadron responded to the call to arms with C-47 Dakotas call- signed 'Atlas'. In 2011 the Greeks were called upon again when, after the UN Security Council issued resolutions 1970 and 1973, the US and its allies asked for Hellenic Air Force (HAF) fighters to help implement Operation Unified Protector (OUP) over Libya. The high number of HAF fighter sorties being flown over the Aegean Sea made such a request impossible to fulfill.
