Two Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning Us acquired by the Netherlands are currently stored while the government waits to make a decision on the replacement for the country's F-16AM/ BM Fighting Falcon fleet. The temporary grounding was announced on April 4 by defence minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, who said American pilots will occasionally fly the Dutch test aircraft to keep them airworthy. An offer to lease the aircraft to the Pentagon was made, but rejected on budgetary grounds. The cost of storing the F-35As has not been revealed.
