Northrop Grumman's E-2D Advanced Hawkeye represents a great improvement on the capabilities of its predecessor, the E-2C Hawkeye 2000. The two aircraft resemble one another with the type's characteristic radar disc above the fuselage and two Rolls-Royce T56-A-427A turboprop engines driving Hamilton Sundstrand NP2000 eight-bladed composite propellers. It is the technology inside the aircraft that marks out the E-2D as more than a radar platform. The new Hawkeye will be able to carry out multi-spectral and networked intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. It can direct network-capable weapons, fired from fighters or warships against air or surface targets and will be an integral part of US naval capabilities to the 2040s and beyond.
