Tracing the history of the Rafale programme I leads back to the mid-1970s, when the Aeronavale and the Arrnee de l'Air (French Naval Air Arm and Air Force) started to look at various options to replace aircraft then in service or about to enter service. In an effort to reduce costs, the Arrnee de I'Air and the Aeronavale agreed on a common requirement and issued a common request for proposals. The stringent French Ministry of Defence requirements called for a true swing role fighter which could operate by day or night in all weather conditions, covering the whole spectrum of air-to-air and air-to-ground operations which until then had required a fleet of different types of aircraft: SEPECAT Jaguar, Dassault Mirage F1CT and Super Etendard attack fighters, Mirage F1CR and Etendard IVPM reconnaissance aircraft, Vought F-8P Crusader, Mirage F1C and Mirage 2000 interceptors, plus Mirage 2000N nuclear bombers.
