The UK Ministry of Defence is considering options for future military flying training for the UK armed Services, including the extent to which industry may be involved. ~*Chris Granville-White explains the background and implications of the UK Military Flying Training System. The concept of the UK Military Flying Training System (MFTS) has been around for some time and during the four years since the inaugural briefings to the defence Industry in July 2000, considerable progress has been made. So why is UK MFTS needed, what will it be, and when will it come to fruition? Two of the original driving factors behind the UK MFTS were the rapidly diminishing fatigue life remaining in the BAE Systems Hawk T.1 advanced jet trainer and the need to have a more appropriate training capability for the lead-in to Eurofighter Typhoon and the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter as they enter UK service. Whilst this eventually led to the decision in July 2003 to procure the new Hawk Mk.128, the story is much wider than this and aspects such as rear-crew training are now a priority.
