Ask any member of the public to name an airliner and the most likely response will be Concorde. Its distinctive lines, Mach 2 capability, 60,000ft (18,288m) operating height, together with its image as the trans-Atlantic shuttle of the rich and famous have made it one of (if not the) most famous aircraft of all time. However, despite being a technological marvel, as a commercial venture Concorde was a failure, with only 14 entering revenue service. Ironically, this scarcity helped build the aircraft's legend and allowed its operators to turn a profit from its services.
