Boeing's 777-200LR Worldliner is about to enter service and will allow airlines to operate longer flights than ever before. Dino Carrara examines this new version of the 777 family, and looks at how it compares with the competing Airbus A340-500. Offering the longest range of any commercial jetliner, Boeing's 777-200LR Worldliner has attracted a great deal of attention. Its ability to fly up to 9,420nm (17,446km) carrying 301 passengers in a three-class configuration extends the range of the 777 family by a massive l,540nm (2,775km). To demonstrate the type's 'long legs', Boeing undertook a record-breaking flight on November 9, 2005, departing from Hong Kong and heading east, taking the 'long way round' to London by flying across the Pacific Ocean, North America and then over the Atlantic.
