Astronaut training centre on cards for Cornwall

A WORLD-LEADING extreme environment research, test and training centre is to be built in Cornwall to serve the space, defence,offshore energy and marine sectors. The centrepiece of the £150m Blue Abyss facility will be the world's largest and deepest indoor pool. Featuring a 50m × 40m stepped pool with a 50m deep shaft, it will hold more than 42,000m3 of water. A sliding roof and 30-tonne crane will allow large objects to be lowered into the pool, from simulated sections of the International Space Station to underwater film sets and even cave systems to test remotely operated vehicles.
