UNITED AIRLINES has announced an agreement for up to 50 examples of Overture, the planned supersonic airliner under development by the Denver, US-based start-up Boom Supersonic.Under the agreement, United will initially purchase 15 Overtures, with an option for an additional 35. Overture is slated to roll out in 2025, fly in 2026 and, following certification, carry passengers by 2029.It is being designed to be the first large commercial aircraft to be net-zero carbon, optimised to run on 100% sustainable aviation fuel. Boom will test technologies for Overture on its XB-1 one-third scale technology demonstrator, N990XB, rolled out in October 2020 and due to fly either in late 2021 or early 2022. United CEO Scott Kirby said: "Today's advancements in technology are making it more viable to include supersonic planes. Boom's vision for the future of commercial aviation, combined with the industry's most robust route network in the world, will give business and leisure travellers access to a stellar flight experience."
