THERE COULD be "widespread chaos" at European airports this summer as capacity returns, warned Olivier Jankovec, ACI Europe director-general, as he urged governments to "work more closely with airports and airlines" on planning.According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), passengers are on average spending three hours on check-in, security, border control, customs and baggage claim at peak times compared with 90 minutes pre-COVID-19 pandemic.This is happening with travel volumes "at only about 30%" of pre-pandemic levels, IATA said, with the longest delays at border control where health credentials are checked.
