SWEDEN'S FOERSVARETS Materielverk (FMV-Swedish Defence Materiel Administration) has signed a contract with Grab Aircraft SE in Germany to deliver a new training aircraft system to the armed forces.The deal, announced on May 5 by the FMV, includes seven Grab 120TP aircraft, simulators, computer-based training (CBT) and flight safety equipment, together with maintenance of the aircraft and simulators.The contract contains options for additional aircraft, simulators, CBT systems and other equipment.The aircraft will be operated by the Svenska Flygvapnet (Swedish Air Force) and will replace the current Sk60 (Saab 105) basic training aircraft. The Swedish government had authorised acquisition of a new basic training aircraft on March 26,2020. The Grab will be designated the Sk40 in Swedish service. It will be operated by the Flygskolan's (Flight School's) Grundlaeggande Flygutbildning (GFU - Basic Flying Training) unit at Linkoping-Malmen.The first aircraft delivery, to the FMV for testing, will take place in May 2022. They will begin to be phased into the Air Force during the first quarter of 2023, when the flight school's instructors will also begin to get to grips with the system, so they will be ready to start training new GFU students in the summer of 2024.
