THE UK Civil Aviation Authority's (CAA) recent issue of the first beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) authorisation for civil operations is a significant regulatory step forward for the UK drone industry.Start-up developer of command and control systems sees.ai will trial a BVLOS concept of operations at three nominated sites. Pre-authorisation for each flight is not required, although the flights are restricted to 150ft maximum altitude and initially an observer able to communicate with the remote pilot will be in visual line of sight with the aircraft.A CAA statement said: "By testing the concept in industrial environments for inspection, monitoring and maintenance purposes, sees.ai aims to prove the safety of its system within this context initially, before extending it to address increasingly challenging missions over time."Two drone service providers, Terra Drone and Sky-Futures, will use sees.ai's BVLOS solution in the trial.
