Embraer unveiled concepts for its new midsize (MSJ) and midlight (MLJ) executive jets during a press conference at the NBAA Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 24, whilst a full-scale mock-up of the MSJ was unveiled on the company's stand the following day. The mock-up was intended to stimulate input from potential customers as part of Embraer's programme evaluation process. Embraer officials said that the primary design drivers for these new aircraft were premium comfort, outstanding performance and a low operating cost.
