November 2020 brought welcome news of breakthroughs in several vaccines in the ongoing global fight against the spread of COVID-19. Days before her 91st birthday, Margaret Keenan became the first person in the world to receive the newly regulator-approved Pfizer/ BioNTech coronavirus jab on December 8 in Coventry, England. The vaccine is said to be around 95% effective in preventing the disease, with 50 million doses potentially available by the end of 2020 and 1.3 billion by the end of 2021, according to Pfizer. Shares in large airlines worldwide soared on the announcement, bringing some hope to a commercial aviation sector decimated by the collapse in passenger demand for most of 2020 as pandemic-imposed travel restrictions took their toll.
