The Indian Air Force (IAF - Bharatiya Vayu Sena) is the last air arm flying the Jaguar. Initially, however, it did not want the type, aiming to use an attack aircraft indigenously developed by the Indian aerospace industry. Unfortunately, a series of setbacks with the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) HF-24 Marut ('Spirit of the Tempest') meant that India had to turn to foreign aircraft manufacturers. After several years of evaluation it was announced on October 6, 1978, that the Jaguar International had been selected to fulfil the Deep Penetration Strike Aircraft requirement.
