Tehran's Mehrabad Airport

Tehran's Mehrabad International Airport is one of two gateways that serve the Iranian capital. The airfield opened in 1938 and until a few years ago handled all domestic and international flights. The new Imam Khomeini International Airport, which is 19 miles (30km) south of the city, opened on May 8, 2004 and gradually most international flights have transferred to the new facility. Mehrabad, only 6 miles (10km) from the city centre, still handles flights for Muslims travelling to Mecca in Saudi Arabia as well as domestic services. The flights to Saudi Arabia accounted for 2.06 million passengers in 2007 and the internal traffic amounted to 9.87 million people passing through the airport.
