This is Volume 36 of Midland Publishing's 'Red Star' series and follows its predecessors in layout style, with numerous black and white photographs, cutaway drawings and general arrangement line drawings. The text has been translated from the Russian by Dmitriy Komissarov and chronicles the work carried out in the Soviet Union on Yakovlev's three vertical/ short take-off and landing (V/STOL) aircraft. Fundamental research on V/STOL in the Soviet Union began in 1956-57 and resulted in the Toorbolyot (Turbo-Flyer). This was a technology demonstrator, similar in appearance to the Rolls-Royce Thrust-Measurement Rig, more popularly known as the 'Flying Bedstead'.
