F-35B Goes Supersonic

On June 10 Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II BF-2 flew faster than the speed of sound, the first time the short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) variant had passed the milestone. US Marine Corps pilot Lt Col Matt Kelly accelerated BF-2 to Mach 1.07 at 30,000ft (9,144m) on a sortie from NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, over the nearby offshore supersonic test track during the first of a series of supersonic flights.
