Lost communications can present a challenging situation for a manned aircraft in some instances, let alone an unmanned system. The X-47B programme will demonstrate some lost communications procedures as part of the trials onboard the USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75). "As an autonomous aircraft you'd have to pre-programme into the system what to do when contingencies occur, * Deppe explained. "If the air system were to lose comms, the airplane would try to re-establish communications with the ship and then execute a lost comms procedure, just like a manned aircraft."
