After losing out to the fifth-generation Lockheed Martin F-35 in Denmark and Belgium along with withdrawing from Canada's fighter competition, the Eurofighter Typhoon's future looked grim. With production for the original four partner nations (Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK) ending, it looked unlikely that the aircraft would continue in production following the completion of relatively small orders from Middle Eastern nations that have been barred from purchasing F-35s. With a German arms embargo imposed on Saudi Arabia, even the prospect of a 48-aircraft top-up buy for the Royal Saudi Air Force seemed to be receding.
