On March 30 2016, the Bulgarian Government allocated funding for two important aircraft programmes, but coordination and further approval will be required from the Ministry of Finance because of competing programmes required by the Voennomorski sili na Republika Balgariya (Bulgarian Navy) and the Land Forces. The budget should be approved by the Bulgarian Parliament by the end of May at the latest. This first programme involves acquisition of up to 16 multi-role NATO-compatible fighters in two phases.
