The age of expeditionary airpower hasn't always been a smooth ride. Because of the stress and strain caused by frequent overseas duty, the Air Force has tried to limit deployments of airmen to no more than 120 days in any given 20-month period. Success, however, remains somewhat elusive. There have been some improvements. However, Air Force officials note, the service continues to see a steady rise in the number of airmen whose expeditionary duties extend beyond the notional 120-day goal. That, they say, is worrisome.
