Kenyatta and Odinga lawyers ready to throw in the referendum towel

For the past two weeks, tension has been palpableduring meetings between, on the one hand, PresidentUhuru Kenyatta and his unofficial heir apparent (andformer arch-foe) Raila Odinga and, on the other, theirlegal teams, led by MPs James Orengo and OtiendeAmollo, as well as by Attorney General Paul KiharaKariuki. The lawyers advised their clients to abandon allhope they had pinned on the constitutional referendumknown as the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), insistingthat ballot had no chance of taking place before thepresidential election scheduled for August 9, 2022.
