KenGen mulls its future in an uncertain world

The state-owned Kenya Electricity Generating Co (KenGen) is looking for a consultancy to help it map out its strategy for the next 10 years. The aim of CEO Rebecca Miano's initiative, which was put out to tender in late May, is to define KenGen's place in Kenya's increasingly fragmented electricity production landscape. After a very timid start in the late 1990s, the liberalisation of the electricity sub-sector has gathered pace in recent years with the growth of independent private producers. Just like its competitors, KenGen faces a growing problem of power overcapacity, one which the Covid-19 pandemic is likely to exacerbate: domestic demand forecasts have been lowered due to the slowdown in the Kenyan economy - its GDP contracted by 1% in 2020.
