The assasination of Libyan commander Mahmoud al- Werfalli, an officer in the elite special forces unit (Saiqa)of the Libyan National Army (LNA), on 24 March,underscores risks of escalating violence in Benghazi. Earlier in March, Mahmoud al-Werfalli, who was wanted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court (ICC), turned a number of local leaders and members of the LNA against him by ransacking some buildings, including a Toyota dealer by the influential local al-Soussi family (Africa Intelligence, 10/03/21).
