European commissioner for neighbourhood and enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, was not able to say where the EU-funded Libyan maritime rescue coordination centre is located. The centre, financed by the European Union to help boats in trouble in the Mediterranean, should have been operational by 2020.The European Union (EU) has not heard from the Libyan Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) to which it has contributed millions of euros. The EU commissioner for neighbourhood and enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, acknowledged on 30 March that he was not able to provide information about the exact location of the MRCC control centre in Libya when questioned by German MEP OEzlem Demirel (the Left). Demirel also wanted to know which company is setting up the facility and when it would be operational.
