The British major BP is taking its time before committing significant investments to Angola's Pala, Astrea et Juno (PAJ) deposits, which are part of the producing Block 31 and are estimated to contain some 130 million barrels. Having been granted permission by the Angolan authorities in July to develop these assets as marginal fields (which comes with tax advantages attached), BP has asked for the deadline to declare these fields as a marginal discovery (Declaracao de Descoberta Marginal) to be pushed back to 31 December of this year. The oil resources minister Diamantino Pedro Azevedo duly approved this timeframe via an executive decree (78/21) dated 24 March.
