Uber-rich Kothari clan hitches its wagon to Lourenco's diamond sector reforms

President Joao Lourenco has found convenient allies for his policies in the Indian Kothari family, which owns the KGK Group, one of the world's biggest players in many facets of the diamond business, including dealing, cutting, polishing and jewellery-making. The Kothari family is the first international supporter of Angola's nascent diamond cutting and polishing industry, having pledged in 2019 to invest more than $120m in establishing workshops before the end of 2021. The main one will be built within the future diamond centre in Saurimo.
