Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok and his new interior minister are attempting to launch a purge of supporters of ousted president Omar al-Bashir, particularly in the army and security services. But they also have to put out a series of fires started by die-hard fans of the ancien regime.Lt Gen Issa Adam Ismail will have spent a mere two months at the head of the Khartoum police. He and a new management team were appointed in early February (Africa Intelligence, 05/03/21), and on 25 March he sparked outrage by demanding the reinstatement of a law on public order. The law, considered retrograde, particularly towards women, was abolished when president Omar al-Bashir fell in 2019.
