The new $60 tax Danish shipping giant Maersk will apply as of 15 March to each container unloaded in the Meridian Port Services (MPS) terminal in the Port of Tema, where previously it charged no fee, has sent shock waves among the importers, exporters and freight companies that use its services. Faced with the escalating problem, the powerful chairman of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF), Eddie Akrong, who works to facilitate international trade, sent a letter to Ghanaian minister of transport Kwaku Ofori Asiamah in late February. In his missive, which Africa Intelligence was able to read, Akrong urged the minister to take action in a case that could cause "chaos in the sub-sector" by increasing the "already high cost of doing business".
