摘要

The Chinese president Xi Jinping has not abandoned his hopes of Tanzania becoming a further staging post along the new silk road he has been building through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). His foreign minister Wang Yi will be stopping off in Tanzania on 7 and 8 January in the course of his tour of Africa in the hope of getting the Bagamoyo port project definitively up and running again. Beijing cannot countenance the idea of its port, which is set to supersede the Kenyan port of Mombasa as the largest on the east African coast, being put on standby for another five years. John Magufuli was re-elected president on 30 October 2020, and during his first five years in office the Bagamoyo project stalled.
