The start of the election campaign in Uganda on 3 November was marked by the brief but spectacular arrest of two of the principal opponents of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) regime, singer Bobi Wine and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate Patrick Oboi Amuriat. This did not exactly enhance President Yoweri Museveni's credentials as a democrat but the arrests made no difference to the very public support he is getting from China. Museveni, who plans to seek reelection in February 2021, has since October been making a show of his excellent relations with the regime of Xi Jinping in the government daily newspaper, New Vision, one of Uganda's main news outlets.
