From Dakhla to Guerguerat and back. TheFMVA, the Moroccan vintage carassociation, chose a route full of patrioticmemories for its first Sahara Classic. Therace, which took place on 29 and 30January, was organised explicity to celebratethe United States' recognition of Morocco'ssovereignty over the Western Sahara,according to the FMVA. It even speeded upits preparations so as to be able toannounce its plans barely three days after amissile attack carried out by the PolisarioFront against the border post in Guergueraton 23 January, which even set alarm bellsringing at the French presidency in Paris(Africa Intelligence, 27/01/21) It was a sortof follow-up to the "kitesurf diplomacy"practised by Rabat for several years alreadyas a a means of affirming its sovereigntyover the disputed territory and ofdeveloping tourism there (AfricaIntelligence,26/03/15).
