Berlusconi family lawyer defends Nigerian state against ENI and Shell in Malabu trial

Nigeria's lawyer, Lucio Lucia, created a sensation before a court in Milan on 9 September when he called on the judges to order Italian oil major ENI and its Anglo- Dutch counterpart Shell to pay Nigeria more than $1bn compensation for the prejudice it suffered as a result of the highly publicised Malabu oil scandal. The tiny Nigerian company Malabu Oil & Gas long controlled one of Nigeria's most prolific offshore fields, OPL 245. The two oil majors are suspected by the Italian judiciary of having paid commissions to take control of the block in 2011 from Malabu, which belonged to former oil minister Dan Etete (Africa Intelligence, 23/01/18).
