Egídio Vaz, the eminence grise behind Nyusi's public image

As Filipe Nyusi's unofficial advisor, the consultant Egídio Vaz is playing an increasingly key role in defending the ruling FRELIMO party's response to the simmering jihadist insurrection in Cabo Delgado province. It seems that he may have been involved in launching a new anonymous website called Notícias de Defesa on 19 June - a platform that toes the government line so closely that it was initially thought to be an initiative of the Ministry of Defence headed by Jaime Bessa Neto. When contacted by Africa Intelligence, Vaz denied being behind the site though he did indicate that he "enjoyed reading it".
