KENYA National Oil boss Mary Jane Mwangi makes sweeping changes to top line-up

According to our sources, Kenya’s National OilCompany (NOC) is about to lose several seniordirectors. The general manager of downstreamoperations Bernard Kibaru was ousted at the endof last year. Kibaru had been appointed in March2018 despite never having worked in the oil & gassector. He previously held a senior position withUchumi Supermarkets ( AEI 826). But his is notthe only head to roll. The group’s director, JohnNguni, who has overseen finance since 2017 wassuspended for several weeks over a downstreamcase. To fill the gap following these departures, AlexMusungu who has been head of procurement since2017, will cover financial matters in the interim, whileKen Mugambi, head of strategy & corporate affairsand with the NOC since 2008, will cover procurement.The NOC managing director Mary JaneMwangi has laid off a dozen interns who were tippedto become future directors of the country’s oil sector.In 2018, Kenya began its oil production via TullowOil, with output at several hundred barrels per day,transported from the Lokichar basin in TurkanaCounty out to the port of Mombasa ( AEI 829).
