It was no fluke that Ishag Bashir Gamaawas appointed Sudan’s minister of oil andgas earlier this month. Previously state ministerat the ministry of roads and bridges,Gamaa chose not to follow the call from theUmma party of which he is a member whenit broke away from President Omar al-Bashirat the start of the year and asked all party officials to leave their ministerial postings.The head of state has been quick to rewardGamaa for his refusal to follow direct Ummaparty orders. This is not the minister’s firststint in the oil and gas sector. He previouslyheld a position with the renewable energydepartment in the 1980s and was secretaryof state for oil between 2012 and 2013.
