Originally known as 'The Aeronautical Society of Great Britain', the Royal Aeronautical Society will this year be celebrating the 150th anniversary of its founding in 1866. It comes as a surprise to many that the Society was founded 36 years before the Wright Brothers first flew and we are fortunate that the Heritage Collection contains an extensive collection of documents and drawings appertaining to the development of aviation and of the work of the Society over that long period of time. We are a learned society and we have come a very long way since the founding members set the original objectives of the Society to be 'for the advancement of aerial navigation and for observations in aerology connected therewith'.
