AIR TRANSPORT IN THE ASIA PACIFIC

Forty to fifty years ago airlines of the Asia-Pacific region were responsible for not more than 10% of the world's air passenger traffic. It is certainly much more than that now. Statistics issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) show that, of total worldwide passenger-kilometres performed by scheduled airlines in 2014, airlines based in the Asia-Pacific region accounted for 31 %, having overtaken both those based in Europe (27%) and those in North America (25%). This is just one manifestation of the economic 'centre of gravity' moving eastwards, a trend that is likely to continue for some time. Consequently, given the quantitative significance of the region, it seems important for there to be a new book devoted to its air transport sector.
