So, almost 48 years since the Roskill Commission had rejected the first formal attempt at 'London' airport expansion which would have entailed building a new airport on reclaimed land at Maplin Sands in the Thames Estuary in favour of building a new airport at Cublington in rural Buckinghamshire - only to for the latter to then be quickly rejected by the Heath government. 44 years after those that had put the Maplin Sands proposal forward abandoned that plan due to higher costs and other issues, the Government has now finally decided to back recommendations from the 'Airports Commission' for a third runway development at Heathrow.
