I found the article by Thomas D. Jones, Explorer to Discovery (January, page 16) to be an interesting look back at America's first satellite launch success almost 50 years ago. Unlike the much younger author (who admits to having been just three years old at that time), I was actually present at the cape on that cloudy evening of January 31, 1958, and witnessed the launch. I was the Robert Moser counterpart for the Vanguard project. (Moser was with the Army team; we were both "countdown operators," among other duties.)
