100 years of history

RAF bomber command represents a pivotal, albeit controversial, chapter in the 100-year history of British aviation - and this month our long-awaited Database feature on the Avro Lincoln forms the core of a special section devoted to aspects of the subject. It alsornincludes a memorable first-hand account of a "sprog" Hampden pilot's first bombing op, which I urge you not to miss - see page 40. Before that, though, we present another special section, this time focusing on the Centenary of Powered Flight in the UK, which will be celebrated on October 16. It includes two epic stories - one on the first aeroplane flight in Britain, and one on the spectacularly successful project to replicate that first aircraft at Farnborough - plus some suitably commemorative nostalgia. It begins on page 22.
