It is now a year since Alex Henshaw, the last link with pre-war British record-setting aviation, died aged 94. Fortunately, he had vividly documented his amazing flying careerrnin the pages ot Aeroplane over the past 20 years, and had also written three bestselling volumes of biography. The first, Flight of the Mew Gull, covered his pre-warrnracing and record-setting career, culminating in the February 1939 solo flight to the Cape and back in 39hr, 36min airborne, a solo record which still stands nearly 70 years later. The second, Sigh for a Merlin, detailing his wartime years flight-testing Spitfires and Lancasters at Castle Bromwich, was followed by Across The Great Divide, about Alex's post-war years.
