摘要

It was 1982. The Argentinian invasion of the Falklands had taken place just a couple of days earlier, and was the only topic of conversation as I sat out another shift with the local Royal Air Force search-and-rescue (SAR) unit. As a medical doctor in my "day job", I flew regularly in the SAR Wessex, usually acting as "survivor" for their training exercises, but occasionally treating genuine survivors.rnHow could we assist? Britain's Task Force was assembling for the long journey from the UK to the South Atlantic, but we had not been invited along. "Bombing practice", stipulated our pilot. We flew out to a remote beach, a huge expanse of sand at low tide.
