Sir, I am an 87-year-old ex-Fleet Air Arm pilot with considerable Swordfish, Albacore, Fulmar and Barracuda hours including more than 100 (training) torpedo attacks. I read the Database article in your May 2009 issue with interest. I note that most of the comments about the flying characteristics of the Barra were by Telegraphist Air Gunners (TAGs)!rnMy overall opinion of the Barra is that it was easy to fly and land on deck, hair-raising to take off from a deck, comfortable to fly in formation, and b****y dangerous to handle in torpedo or dive-bombing attacks. Those Youngman dive brakes, used in both torpedo and bombing attacks, were lethal.
